On April 6th 2006, Richard Hodges held
an interesting seminar on “Butrint: An Adriatic port between ca.
A.D. 400–1000”. Based on the long and very interesting fieldwork
that he has directed in Butrint, Richard Hodges made a very good
overview of the results mainly focusing on the period between A.D.
400–1000.

The interpretations were based on the
long debate starting with Pirene’s thesis on the rise of the
Medieval cities, arriving to the arguments of Horden and Purcell in
the “Corrupting Sea” and Michael McCormick in the “Origins of the
European Economy”.

A review of the unique data from the
6th to 9th centuries A.D. at Butrint showed the importance of this
site in understanding the economic dynamics of this little known
period in the Mediterranean area.

This very interesting and stimulating
talk was followed by numerous discussions and questions.
