On April 20th 2006 Ermelinda Hoxhaj
presented part of her BA thesis research on the “Ethnoarchaeological
study of the modern cemetery of Durres”. She focused her
presentation on the methodology, scope and main questions put
forward by this study, as well as on the presentation of the
cemetery and the structure of data collected during her
observations.

The underlining idea of this study,
which was appreciated and discussed at length by the participants,
was the validity of the ethno archaeological methods and approaches
for the interpretation of the archaeological contexts. During the
presentation and discussions was underlined the complexity of the
funerary data and their interpretation in social terms. Of
particular importance seemed the relationship between social forms
and their representations in burial. The case of modern cemetery at
Durres, seems to confirm the existence of some positive
relationships between these two components of society, however
complicated and difficult the assessment of this relationship might
be.

Lively discussions and debate followed
the presentation.
