The fifth meeting for this season of
the Group for Archaeological Debate was organized around the seminar
“The Archaeology of Architecture and the Great Basilica at Butrint”
by Nevila Molla. The seminar was based on the results of a one year
research undertaken by Nevila Molla as part of her MA program based
at the University of Siena, Italy.

The study of Butrint’s major religious
building by Nevila Molla presents a new approach to the standing
structures based on the principals of stratigraphic archaeology.

The thorough examination of the
architectural monument provides new evidence through graphic,
photographic and written documentation of a long sequence of
construction ranging from Late Antiquity to the Medieval Period.

The recently developed methodology of
the Archaeology of Architecture demonstrates that the monument is a
basilica built in the Late Antique period. It underwent restorations
and modifications in the medieval period, with the two chapels of
the late 10th – early 11th century being the most conspicuous
elements.

The presentation was followed by an
opened discussion, with many questions on the topic.
